Clerk Describes Kinston Armed Robbery By Man With 2 Butcher Knives

A Kinston store clerk told WITN about being robbed at knifepoint before the robber stole his car early Monday morning.

Mathew George works at the Tobacco Cove in Kinston. Police say 21-year old Massachusetts native Karl Covington Jr. robbed the store around 5:15 Monday afternoon, and then drove off in the clerk's SUV. George says it was a scary situation when Covington grabbed him armed with two large butcher knives.

"I feel somebody hugging me from behind, and I say who's hugging me? And I go to look back and I lifted my head, and I saw a big knife in his hand," said George.

George says the suspect took jewelry and emptied the cash register.

Covington was arrested early Tuesday morning and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, he was jailed in the Lenoir County under a $60,000 secured bond.
Police say a man was a long way from home when he robbed a business here in Eastern Carolina.

Kinston police arrested Karl Covington, Jr. Tuesday morning around 5:10 a.m. for Monday's holdup of The Tobacco Cove. The 21-year-old Covington is from Springfield, Massachusetts.

Police say the store on Hardee Road, which is across from the Vernon Park Mall, was robbed around 5:30 p.m. Monday. Mathew George, a clerk at the shop, told police a man armed with two knives came in and demanded money. George said he was attacked, but was able to free himself and call police.

Police say the robber made his getaway in George's SUV, along with cash and jewelry from the store.

Covington is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and jailed on a $60,000 secured bond.

The employee's SUV was found on Harvey Circle.
