Man pleads guilty to raping mentally handicapped teen

A man will have to spend at least four years, 10 months in prison after a guilty plea to raping a 15-year-old mentally handicapped girl.

District Attorney Scott Thomas says Kenny Barnes of New Bern pled guilty to second degree rape on Wednesday. The victim was known to Barnes, according to Thomas.

The 33-year-old Barnes, who has no previous record, was sentenced to serve between four years, 10 months and six years, 10 months in prison.

He will be put on probation after his prison term and have to register as a sex offender for at least 30 years. The judge said the man posed enough risk that he ordered Barnes subject to satellite-based monitoring for the rest of his life.
