Man Tazed By Greenville Police After Chase

A man was tazed by police after a brief chase this afternoon.

Greenville police say it happened around 12:30 p.m. on Fifth Street, near the intersection with Davis Street.

Sgt. Joe Friday says officers encountered a suspicious man with his hand in his pocket. Officers asked him to remove the hand, but he wouldn't and took off running, according to Friday.

The sergeant says during the chase the man threw down what appeared to be a bag. A short time later the man turned and lunged at an officer with a clenched fist. Friday says that's when one of the officers tazed him.

He appeared to have a seizure and EMS was called, according to Friday.

A man who says he's the suspect's brother says the man was complying with officers when he was tazed.

Friday says charges are expected and the investigation is ongoing.
