NEW INFO: Elderly Man On Farm Tractor Seriously Injured After Being Hit By Trooper

An elderly man on a farm tractor was seriously injured Monday after being hit by a state trooper in Halifax County.

The Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 4:30 p.m. on U.S. 158 some five miles west of Roanoke Rapids.

First Sgt. B.W. Overton says Trooper A.A. Lucas was headed to another wreck with his blue lights and siren on when he struck the small farm tractor which was headed in the other direction. He says physical evidence shows the tractor turned left in front of the patrol vehicle, possibly trying to make a turn into a driveway.

Wilson Jarrell is in serious but stable condition after being airlifted to Vidant Medical Center. The 79-year-old man lives right down the road from the crash.

The trooper was injured slightly and released from Halifax Regional Hospital.

Overton estimates that Trooper Lucas, who has been with the Highway Patrol for one year, was traveling between 55 and 65 miles per hour at the time of the crash. He said evidence will be presented to the district attorney to see if any charges should be brought in the case.
