A winter weather advisory is in effect until 7am on Saturday for Beaufort, Mainland Hyde, Martin, Outer Banks Dare, Tyrrell, Washington and western Dare County. The threats are black ice and slick roadways.
A man is dead after police say the scooter he was riding was struck by a man driving while impaired.
Woody Spencer with Kinston Public Safety says around 7 p.m. Sunday 56-year-old Melvin Earl Sutton was driving a Ford Taurus south on Independence Street when he hit 26-year-old Jamal Williams' scooter head on.
Sutton is charged with Felony Death By Vehicle, Driving While Impaired, Driving Left Of Center and Resisting A Public Officer.
He's due in court October 7th.
Online records show 56-year-old Melvin Earl Sutton has a criminal record dating back to 1989 which includes convictions for DWI, reckless driving, assault on a police officer, burglary, drugs and larceny. His last conviction was in 2011.
