Man Charged After Girlfriend Ends Up In Coma At Vidant

A Jones County man is behind bars after deputies say he assaulted his girlfriend who remains in a coma at Vidant Medical Center.

Hank Daughtey of Pollocksville is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill.

A warrant says something similar to a hammer was used in the attack.

Deputies say last Tuesday around 10:00 a.m. an ambulance responded to Island Creek Road for what the boyfriend said was an overdose.

Mandi Kane was first sent to CarolinaEast Medical Center where deputies quickly learned from medical staff that the woman was not suffering from an overdose, but instead was the victim of a serious physical assault. They say she had a punctured lung and severe brain trauma.

The victim was transferred to Vidant where she's had multiple surgeries and is in critical condition.

The 32-year-old Daughtey, who deputies say has a history of violence and domestic assaults, is in jail on a $500,000 bond.
