(NBC News) A snorkeler swimming off of California's Catalina Island came across the find of a lifetime over the weekend.
Jasmine Santana, an instructor at the Catalina Island Marine Institute, spotted the carcass of an oarfish on the sea floor.
The mysterious creatures are believed to be behind many of the "sea serpent" sightings reported throughout history.
The 18-foot long fish weighs nearly 300 pounds, but is a relatively small example of an oarfish, which can reach 50 feet in length.
