Opportunities for people wishing to publicly pray for and mourn the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting continue in Eastern Carolina.

First United Methodist Church in Washington is organizing a public prayer service Monday at 6:30 p.m. The doors of the church will be open at 5 p.m. for private prayer time. Senior Pastor Danny Allen will lead the prayer service.

First United Methodist Church is located at 304 West 2nd St. in Washington.

On Tuesday, the Pitt County NAACP will sponsor a candlelight and prayer vigil for the victims and families affected by the tragedy in Connecticut. The event is titled "A Time of Prayers, Love and Unity."

The vigil will take place on the steps of the Pitt County Courthouse in Greenville, on the Third St. side of the building.
