Car Lands On Driver On Way To Hospital In Lenoir County

The Highway Patrol said a man was pinned underneath his vehicle after running a red light and hitting another SUV.

Troopers said the accident happened on Highway 258 at Pauls Path Road in Lenoir County about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday.

A 1998 Chevy Blazer was traveling east on Hull Road in Kinston when the driver, Kevin Lee Potter, 34 of La Grange, got a phone call saying his mother was in the hospital, according to investigators. Troopers said Potter then ran a red light at a high rate of speed striking a Jeep driven by Betty Reyes, 45 of Faison. Potter was thrown from his vehicle during the crash and his SUV landed on top of him, according to Troopers.

Firefighters from Lenoir County were able to use tools to lift the SUV off of Potter. He was then airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Potter's passenger, Christina Whitley, 43, of Kinston was also injured and taken by ambulance to Vidant. Reyes was taken to Lenoir Memorial Hospital.

Potter was charged with reckless driving and stop light violation.
