By  |

Some 1,000 Marines and sailors are leaving Camp Lejeune for a six-month deployment in Afghanistan.

Marine Corps spokesman 1st Lt. Jim Stenger says members of Combat Logistics Battalion 6 will depart in groups over the next several days, with the first group leaving on Wednesday.

The unit is departing from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.

Stenger says the battalion will provide logistics support to units operating in the southwest of Afghanistan. While deployed, the battalion is forming the nucleus of a larger unit called Combat Logistics Regiment 2.

The unit will advise and assist the Afghan National Security Forces during their deployment.
