New Bern Jury Convicts Three In Terror Trial

Jurors in New Bern have convicted three men in a North Carolina terrorism plot.

The federal jury reached their verdict shortly after 2:00 p.m. after deliberating over a two day period.

Mohammad Omar Aly Hassan was found guilty of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and not guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, kidnap, maim and injure persons of a foreign country.

Ziyad Yaghi was found guilty of both of those counts, while Hysen Sherifi was found guilty on those counts as well as conspiracy to kill or injure a federal employee and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

Prosecutors say the men were part of a small group based near Raleigh that planned to carry out jihadist attacks against the U.S. military and targets in other countries.

Three other men arrested in 2009 in connection with the plot pleaded guilty earlier this year.

The three will be sentenced at a later date.
