Jury Finds Man Not Guilty In Murder Of Duke Graduate Student

On Wednesday, a jury unanimously found Laurence Lovette not guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Duke graduate student Abhijit Mahato. The jury also found Lovette not guilty of robbery with a firearm.

Lovette was accused of killing Mahato in January 2008.

On Monday, the jury asked the judge to examine several documents and exhibits related to the case. On Tuesday, the judge agreed and allowed the jury to review those items.

In Monday's closing arguments, Lovette's lawyers claimed the state did not present sufficient evidence to prove he committed the murder.

Lovette is currently serving a life sentence for the March 2008 death of UNC Student Body President Eve Carson.
