Child Drowning Victim Identified; Mom Had Previous Drowning Conviction

We now know the name of toddler who drowned Saturday in an above ground pool in Jacksonville, while the child's mother was convicted last year in another toddler drowning.

A death certificate filed Tuesday at the Onslow County Courthouse says Mercadiez Reed died Saturday from drowning. Jacksonville police say the drowning happened at a home on Forest Grove Avenue around 3:00 p.m. and they are still investigating the death.

Documents show that the 20 month old's mother is Amanda Reed, who went by Amanda Stump at the time of the child's birth in September 2011.

Last year, Reed pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter for the death of a 19 month old girl who drowned in a rain-swollen drainage ditch in 2010. Investigators said Reed confessed to smoking marijuana and taking a prescription anti-depressant before the child was dropped off at her home to be watched.

Reed was given a suspended sentence in that case. No one has been charged in the latest toddler drowning.
