Jacksonville High School To Implement New Security Features

An Onslow County High School Principal is hoping that a change to traffic patterns will increase safety.

Onslow County Schools say Jacksonville High School will implement new safety and security precautions starting Monday.

A big change is that gates near the school will be closed during the day.

From 7:30 AM to 2 PM, the Vernon Drive to Gum Branch Road gates, and the gate nearest the campus tennis courts to Gum Branch Road, will be closed. Students, staff and visitors are asked to use the front driveway, as well as the Clyde Drive entrance.

JHS Principal Donna Lynch says it's a part of the annual revision of her strategic plan. Lynch says safety and security is part of that.

A former teacher who lives next door to the school says he's OK with traffic, if it keeps students safe.

Francisco Blanco says, "When you hear the news about many other places having problems. People from outside the campus coming in with drugs and things like that, this will help perhaps."

Principal Lynch did not mention any specific issues that led to the gates being closed during the day, just that security is part of the decision.
