Jacksonville Celebrates National Police Week

As tribute to National Police week, a local police force honored fallen officers on Thursday.

Jacksonville Public Safety officials hosted an observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day in Jacksonville.

Peace Officers Memorial Day pays tribute to and remembers those who have served and continue to serve and protect the community.

Terry Lanier was among the officers recognized. Lanier was on duty when he was stabbed and killed by a man in 1979, just a few months before his daughter was born.

"It's an honor for my father, as well as others who have lost loved ones in the line of duty," said Jennifer Arnold, Lanier's daughter. "This is the best thing the city of Jacksonville could do for those fallen heroes."

The event included an honor guard, ceremonial music and laying of ceremonial wreaths.

The observance was held at the monument area next to the lake in the Jacksonville Commons.
