A washout from Hurricane Arthur is prompting the closing of a major highway in Dare County.
The Department of Transportation says U.S. 264 will be closed near Stumpy Point Road for twelve hours, starting at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Crews put a steel plate over the washout so traffic could temporarily use the highway, but Wednesday night workers will fix the damage.
Those wanting to travel past Stumpy Point will have to take a 90 mile detour on US 64 to Columbia, then take Highway 94 south to get back on US 264.
The DOT expects the road to open before 6:00 a.m. Thursday.
