Hundreds Watch Greenville SCLC MLK Jr. Day Parade

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference held a parade in Greenville Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

More than a hundred people marched from 10th and Greene Streets through downtown to the town common Monday morning. Mayor Allen Thomas and city council members Dennis Mitchell and Kandie Smith also made the walk. Children along the route were tossed candy treats while car clubs and motorcycle groups helped rev up spectators.

Portia Morning spoke to WITN about watching Monday's parade.
"Just to be a part, celebrate, you know, the great events that Dr. King, Dr. Martin Luther King set forth for everybody. Not just blacks, but for everybody," said Morning.

A gathering was held after the parade at the Pitt County Courthouse with several other civil rights groups to encourage the community to take action on issues like education and crime.
