Hubert Woman Sentenced For $234K Health Insurance Fraud

An Onslow County woman is headed to federal prison after she pleaded guilty to taking $234,000 from her insurance company.

Medina Blanton, 39, of Hubert was sentenced to one year and one day in prison and three years of supervised release. Blanton is also supposed to pay AFLAC $234,295, which is the amount of money they say she took from the insurance company using phony medical claims.

Prosecutors say Blanton filed $234,295 in false Hospital Confinement Indemnity claims. Blanton and her family members had a Hospital Confinement Indemnity insurance policy with AFLAC.
Blanton created and filed phony claims with the insurance company, saying she and members of her family had been admitted to the hospital for inpatient treatment, according to the US Attorney's Office.

The fraud went on from 2004 to 2010, according to prosecutors.
