The Highway Patrol says that three people involved in a fatal crash that killed one, had been coming from a party when the accident happened.

Trooper Peele says that 18-year-old Stephen Thorp was driving a 1997 Chevy pick-up truck with 2 passengers on West Barr Road Saturday morning in Beaufort County, when Thorp ran off the road to the right, overcorrected, and hit a ditch.

Officials say that 23-year-old Marquise Brewer, who had been visiting from Louisiana, was killed in the accident. 25-year-old Matthew Tharp was treated and released from the hospital. Troopers say that Brewer was sitting in the middle passenger seat, while Tharp sat in the right passenger seat.

Troopers say alcohol usage is suspected and that none of the people involved were wearing seat belts.

Following the accident, troopers say that Thorp left the scene of the accident on foot and received a ride to a friend’s home on Grover Smith Road, just off Highway 43.

Troopers say they spent 13 hours looking for Thorp and that he had multiple people trying to keep him from being found.

Officials say Thorp was ultimately found between 5:30 and 6 p.m. in a wooded area off of Highways 43 and 102 in Pitt County.

Thorp has been charged with felony hit and run with more charges expected by troopers.

Thorp being on a $100,000 bond. He's being held in the Pamlico County Jail due to the issues with the Beaufort County Jail.

Trooper Peele says that charges are pending for other people involved in the case.

Highway Patrol was assisted by one of its helicopters and would like to thank the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, and ALE for their help.
