Firefighters with the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies are working to extinguish a 60-acre wildfire that began Monday night in the Croatan National Forest.
The wildfire is contained, and firefighters are working to fully extinguish the blaze.
The wildfire is located off Old Church Road, near Highway 58.
Fire managers believe the wildfire was intentionally set by someone in five separate areas around 5 p.m. Monday.
The incident is still under investigation.
No injuries or property damage have been reported, but several structures were threatened last night.
Firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service, North Carolina Forest Service and the local volunteer fire department have worked to suppress the fire.
The NC DOT reports congestion for NC 58 in both directions in Carteret County due to heavy smoke.
The smoke is coming from fires in the Croatan National Forest.
The congestion, which started around 8:00 a.m. and is expected to last until 12:00 p.m., is North of Peletier on NC 58 and some secondary routes in the Stella and Peletier area.
Visibility is greatly reduced and drivers are urged to use extra caution.
