Just over a month after they were shot in the line of duty, three Police officers were honored Monday night in Havelock.
Lieutenant Brian Borton, Sergeant Jim Fahnestock, and Patrol Officer Loren Boone were each given city of Havelock Purple Hearts, as well as plaques from the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
The three were each shot in the hand on February 14th, allegedly by 60-year-old Richard Berry inside Berry's home, as they tried to stop him from harming himself.
Fahnestock says the three are lucky to be alive. "An inch to the left, an inch to the right one of us could have been awarded these posthumously. And I would definitely not want to see that."
Fahnestock is still recovering from his injury. He says in three weeks he'll start physical therapy, and the doctors say he should make a full recovery and return to duty.
