Hatteras Yachts Owner Wants To Sell; Laying Off 105 Employees

There's another economic blow to one Eastern Carolina county with the layoffs of more workers and the possible sale of a long standing brand name.

Brunswick Corporation says it is seeking a buyer for its Hatteras and CABO brands of yachts and sportfishing boats.

Hatteras Yachts also says it will lay off 105 employees at its New Bern plant. The company says to better adjust to market conditions, Hatteras informed about 75 full-time production employees and some 30 temporary employees that they would be losing their jobs.

Brunswick says it wants to exit the sportfishing convertible category and instead concentrate resources for its remaining yacht brands, Sea Ray and Meridan.

The company expects the new owner of Hatteras and CABO to keep the New Bern facility.

Brunswick purchased Hatteras in 2001 and CABO in 2006.

At the end of November, Hatteras had some 545 employees in New Bern.
