The Christmas spirit is emerging on Hatteras Island for the weekend.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open for a unique Winter Climb on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. The National Park Service requires all climbers are required to be at least 42 inches tall and must climb the steps on their own. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The lighthouse is 248 steps to the top, equal to climbing a 12-story building.

For those people staying on the ground, the Hatteras Village Civic Association is holding its annual Hatteras Village Christmas Parade beginning at 2 p.m.

Those who watch the parade are invited to the community building for home-baked cookies and hot chocolate and to hear the announcement of the parade winners, who will receive cash prizes.
