Girl Recovering From Shark Bite At North Topsail Beach

A 10-year-old Pennsylvania girl is expected to be released from a Chapel Hill hospital after she was bitten by a shark at North Topsail Beach.

Town officials say the bite happened in the southern end of the beach on Sunday.

Cassidy Cartwright says she was in three feet of water when she felt something on her leg. She says the shark bit her twice on the leg before letting go.

The girl was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill where doctors were able to save her leg.

The last shark bite at North Topsail Beach happened in 2007. Onslow County is now tied with New Hanover County for having the most shark bites in the state, both have had nine since 1935.
