Major flooding in Roanoke Rapids caused a giant sinkhole to form.
The sinkhole is on Franklin Street near 2nd Street. WITN talked to one homeowner that lives right in front of the sinkhole.
Herbert Brown says he looked outside around 6 a.m. Saturday and heard a cracking and falling sound. He then saw the ground cave in.
Brown says it was a terrifying experience, "When I saw that, I wanted to get to higher ground. I didn't know the extent of this, when it was going to stop washing away. As as far as I could see back this way water was coming."
The water flooded Brown's yard and his car.
At least one other sinkhole was reported in Roanoke Rapids. Officials say throughout the city there's an estimated half million dollars in damage.
