Gay Rights Group Wants State Bias Order Expanded

By  |

Gov. Pat McCrory says he's following language within federal and state laws while issuing an executive order requiring nondiscrimination in state employee hiring that leaves out sexual orientation among the listed protections.

McCrory signed the order earlier this week. He told reporters Tuesday recent predecessors as governor signed similar orders. This one identified race, religion, gender, age and disability among those differences that can't form the basis for discrimination.

McCrory says he doesn't put up with any type of discrimination and employees are evaluated upon their work performance.

Chris Sgro with Equality North Carolina wants McCrory to revisit the order and add protections for gay and transgender North Carolina residents. He says such exclusions flew in the face of fairness and discourages some people from working for the state.
