Gas Leak Causes Evacuations

Authorities say a gas leak resulted in the evacuation of several businesses in Williamston.

Officials with Martin County Emergency Management say it happened around 1:15 p.m. when crews damaged a natural gas line as they were working to lay a water line on East Boulevard near Food Lion.

Officials say several businesses, including Mama's Pizza, Subway, and Rite Aid were evacuated for about 30 minutes.

East Boulevard was down to two lanes for about three hours between 1:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., according to officials.
