GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Shane Carden threw for a school-record 447 yards, 46 completions and five touchdowns to lead East Carolina to a 52-38 win over Old Dominion in the season opener for both schools Saturday night.
Carden broke his own records for yards passing and tied his record for TD passes.
The Pirates quarterback wasn't the only one to make it into the record book. Justin Hardy tied his school record of 16 receptions and also had 191 yards receiving.
Carden threw three touchdowns in the first half to give the Pirates a 21-17 lead.
He threw two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including the record-tying fifth on a 1-yard pass to Davon Grayson to extend the lead to 49-31.
Grayson scored on three of his four receptions for East Carolina.
Taylor Heinicke went 38 of 51 for 338 yards and three touchdowns for the Monarchs. He was the game's leading rusher with 52 yards and a score.
ECU has won a back and forth grudge match with Old Dominion University.
Tens of thousands of Pirate faithful are ready for tonight's first home game of the season, as ECU takes on Old Dominion.
Fourth-year head coach Ruffin McNeill and his team are also gearing up for the non-conference matchup.
This will be the first time ECU and Old Dominion meet up on the gridiron. There are three more games this season where ECU will meet up with teams it has not played before in football, including Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee and Florida International University.
