Free Press, Other Newspapers Abandoning "Tabloid" Look

There will soon be a new look at newspaper racks in many cities here in Eastern Carolina as three daily papers return to a more traditional look.

The Kinston Free Press announced this morning that it will abandoned its compact "tabloid" look, in favor of a wider "broadsheet" style. The Jacksonville Daily News and the New Bern Sun Journal, all owned by Halifax Media Group, will do the same thing.

Free Press Editor Bryan Hanks said they listened to readers who disliked the compact look that came about five years ago. He called it a mistake and a bad move that they are fixing.

Not only will be newspapers go back to a wider format, they will also once again have sections, like sports and classifieds.

The newspapers will make the switchover on May 1st.
