Forum In Carteret County Addresses School Safety

State public safety officials were in Morehead City Wednesday night talking school safety.

Safety in schools is a major topic for parents, teachers and administrators, even more since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in December.

The Department of Public Safety, along with other agencies like the Center for Safer Schools, held a public forum at Morehead City Primary School. They gave presentations to parents and faculty about how to keep violence out of schools, and strategies for improving learning environments.

Public Safety Secretary Kieran Shanahan says since Sandy Hook, schools haven't been looked at the same. "It erodes ones sense of feeling safe. So when a parent drops their child off at school, they used to think it was a wonderful, loving environment. Now, they're not so sure."

In comparison with the state average rate of violent acts in high schools, Pitt, Pamlico, Jones, and Beaufort Counties all had students above the state average, while Craven, Carteret, and Onslow were below.
