Former Military Dog Helping Troops At Fort Bragg

A former military working dog is spending his retirement helping veterans and visiting Fort Bragg's Womack Army Medical Center.

The Fayetteville Observer reports that Brit is trained to help injured veterans and participate in Patriot Guard events, including funerals. The 8-year-old German shepherd was a narcotics detection dog for a military police unit based in Washington until he was adopted earlier this year.

Mark and Jasmine Russell of Fayetteville fought for 11 months to adopt Brit. They say they wanted to thank a military working dog with a comfortable retirement. Jasmine Russell says Britt easily passed therapy classes and is particularly popular among soldiers who served overseas.

She says some soldiers break down in tears while hugging Brit. She adds that every day of that 11-month wait was worth it.
