North Carolina health officials say 14 people have now died from the flu so far this flu season, one of the worst in a decade.

State epidemiologist Dr. Megan Davies told the News and Observer newspaper that the season may be peaking, but the number of flu cases may stay very high for several weeks.

The newspaper also reported that of the 14 people who died from the flu, five of them had received the flu vaccine. Dr. Davies told the News and Observer that those five people were over the age of 88. The flu vaccine is less effective in the elderly, according to the CDC.
