A group of students at a New Bern school will have a safer way to walk to school.
The city of New Bern, the NCDOT and Craven County Schools cut the ribbon and showed off phase one of the Safe Routes to School project Wednesday NEAR H.J. MacDonald Middle School.
The project involves two phases. The first phase now complete will allow community members and students to walk safely through Elizabeth Avenue, and Racetrack Road in a safer manor than before.
The freshly poured sidewalks provide a safe way for children to walk to school and give them an outlet for completing physical activity while having fun; two of the most important goals of the Safe Routes to School program.
Mayor pro tem Sabrina Bengel says the grants funded by the DOT give the city a much needed upgrade in the area .
Phase one cost $99,000 and phase two of the sidewalks will cost $120,000, which is all funded by state grants.
