RALEIGH (AP) - Fire Prevention Week is this week and State Fire Marshal Wayne Goodwin is emphasizing preventing kitchen fires.
Goodwin says a third of the more than 8,100 home fires in North Carolina last year were caused by people cooking.
Goodwin says people need to stay in the kitchen any time they are frying, grilling or broiling food. He says people need to stay home any time they are cooking and use a timer to remind them they are using the stovetop or oven.
Fire Prevention Week starts Monday. Goodwin says he is encouraging families to hold fire drills on Wednesday to practice how they would respond if their home caught fire.
