Authorities say a Pitt County man, who was killed in a mobile home fire, died from smoke inhalation.

The Pitt County Medical Examiner's Office says it received the body of Dale Wilcox and an autopsy was scheduled for Thursday. Neighbors say Wilcox was believed to be 64-years-old, and was killed Wednesday evening when fire ripped through his home on Highway 43 near Calico. The fire was reported shortly after 6:00 p.m.

Sheriff Neil Elks says the fire started in the living room, while the victim was found in the bedroom.

Neighbors tell us Wilcox had lived there for about 15 years. He lived alone, and had a stroke a few years ago, but neighbors say he was still able to get around.

The man's three dogs survived the fire, but no one has seen his cat, according to neighbors.

The Pitt County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fatal fire.
