First On WITN: Crews Respond To House Fire In Williamston

Firefighters say a blaze that destroyed an abandoned house in Williamston appears to have been accidental.

Firefighters and police responded around 12:40 a.m. to the home on Griffin Avenue.

The fire department says the home was slated for demotion and they believe a homeless person was living inside. Officials say it appears to have started in or around the fire place.

The home was a total loss and firefighters continue to investigate th exact cause.

Martin County dispatchers say crews were called to the scene of a house fire in Williamston.

The call came in at 12:41 a.m. Dispatchers did not have an exact address at this time, but said the fire was on Griffin Avenue, the first house on the left of Jamesville Road.

There is no word what started the fire. There are no reports of injuries. A report indicated the house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.

Dispatchers say the bulk of the crew from Williamston Fire-Rescue cleared the scene at 3 a.m. However, they were keeping a watch for flare-ups.
