A family escaped a fire in their house in the east.
The fire was reported just after 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night in the north side of Kinston on Railfence Drive; that's in the Farmgate subdivision. Kinston Fire Chief, Don Crawford, told WITN the resident was cooking on the stove, turned off the burners, and went to see his mother down the road. Once the fire started, he was able to return and get his children out of the home. That resident tried battling the blaze with a fire extinguisher and a neighbor's help.
Crawford said no one was injured in the fire and damage was minimal.

The Kinston Free Press says Carlos Parker turned off the burners to the stove he and his children were cooking on, and went to go see his mother who lives down the street.
Just after leaving the house, Parker says his daughter was screaming about the fire. The paper says he and a neighbor put the fire out with extinguishers.
