Investigators said a mother and her three children escaped their burning home by 6:30PM on Sunday evening with their lives, but not much else. Bertie County deputies said a fire was called in from a home located at 548 Piney Woods Road in Lewiston. Volunteer firefighters said the woman and her three children were outside of the home by the time crews were on scene.

Lewiston Volunteer Fire Chief, Larry Mizell, said flames were shooting out of one part of the house's rooftop. While firefighters had contained the blaze, a few hours later another call came in that the fire had rekindled. More crews arrived to control that fire.

By Monday morning, deputies said the home was uninhabitable, and volunteer firefighters are still working to find the cause of the blaze.

Mizell said the as soon as the fire report is finished, the family will be able to take the paperwork to a local center for help reestablishing their home and finding temporary housing.
