FIRE CHIEF: House Fire Started In Rarely Used Spare Bedroom

Fire crews said a couple smelled smoke, and opened the door to their spare bedroom to find it fully engulfed in flames.

Swan Quarter Fire Chief Jeffrey Stobesberry told WITN around 7:30 p.m., crews were called to a home on Quarter Road.

Firefighters said after battling the house fire, three-quarters of the home was destroyed.

While the boyfriend and girlfriend living in the home made it out safely with their cats, Stobesberry said a handful of firefighters had to be treated on the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

The couple told investigators they smelled smoke, and found the odor coming from their spare bedroom. Once they opened that door, they were met with lapping flames.

Chief Stobesberry said while the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it likely began as an electrical fire.

Crews are reassessing the damage to make a final determination.
