The reading specialist who questioned the literacy level of athletes being admitted to North Carolina won't be testifying in Washington before a U.S. Senate committee.
In an email to The Associated Press, Mary Willingham said she was told Friday that she was no longer on the witness list for the hearing before the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. The hearing is on "Promoting the Well-Being and Academic Success of College Athletes."
Willingham says she hopes an athlete takes her place at Wednesday's hearing because she thinks senators need to hear directly from them.
The Chronicle of Higher Education first reported the hearing and said former UCLA player Ed O'Bannon also plans to testify. The O'Bannon antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA is scheduled to go to trial next month.
