One person was attacked and extra security was gearing up at two schools after four Capuchin monkeys escaped from a home in Eastern Carolina.
Currituck County Sheriff Susan Johnson says the four animals escaped from a home in the area of Wedgewood Lakes in Moyock around 11:20 a.m. Their owner said they would become vicious if cornered.
Less than an hour later, deputies were told one man was attacked and bitten by the monkeys and was on his way to a hospital for treatment.
Two nearby schools were alerted that extra deputies would be on hand around dismissal time to ensure the children safely got on the buses. Fortunately, the animals were captured before dismissal at Moyock Elementary and Moyock Middle schools.
The sheriff says two of the monkeys were captured, a third was tranquilized while the fourth was shot by law enforcement officers. It's not immediately known if that fourth monkey survived.
Johnson says the investigation into the monkey escape continues.
