An elderly woman was killed after troopers say her pickup truck ran off the road and struck a tree. Her dog survived the crash, but was killed a few minutes later by a passing vehicle.
Killed in the 11:20 a.m. crash was Joan Blandford of New Bern.
The accident happened on Brices Creek Road near the New Bern Yacht Club. Troopers say the 74-year-old woman's truck ran off the road in a curve, struck a driveway culvert, hit a tree and landed in a yard.
The Highway Patrol says after the accident the woman's dog jumped out of the truck and was struck and killed by a passing vehicle.
Troopers are still investigating why the woman's vehicle ran off the road.
