Elderly Driver Charged After Making U-Turn

An elderly driver has been charged after troopers say she made on U-turn on Highway 17, causing another vehicle to land on its top.

The crash happened around 8:00 a.m. in front of the Wilco Hess in Bridgeton.

Troopers say Maria Dzwonkowski of New Bern was northbound and tried to make the U-turn in front of the convenience store. They say her vehicle collided with a southbound vehicle, driven by Linda Smith of Vanceboro. Smith's vehicle flipped over and the highway was blocked for about a half hour.

Smith was taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center where she was treated for minor injuries and released.

The 77-year-old Dzwonkowski has been charged with failure to yield.
