Edgecombe County Officer Under Investigation

A local police officer is under investigation; court records show 50-year-old William Barnes, a police officer in Princeville in Edgecombe County, is charged with obtaining property by false pretense, altering a title and conspiracy.

The Daily Southerner says the DMV charged the police sergeant for selling a vehicle, but the customer did not get the vehicle or the title to it.

Princeville's police chief told the paper that Barnes is on paid leave in connection to an ongoing investigation that is separate from the charges against him.

The Daily Southerner says the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office is investigating Barnes in connection to a domestic violence situation.
