Edgecombe County is ranked number one in the state for several sexually transmitted diseases.
According to the HIV/STD Surveillance Report, Edgecombe County is number one in North Carolina in reported cases of HIV and chlamydia, number two in the state in reported cases of AIDS and gonorrhea and number 17 in the state in reported cases of syphilis.
The report says Edgecombe County has experienced a steady climb in the number of confirmed cases between 2007 and 2011.
The report shows that seven of the top nine counties in the state in diagnosed AIDS cases are in the east: Jones, Edgecombe, Lenoir, Wilson, Martin, Pitt and Nash.
