East Carteret Fans Rally Around Undefeated Team

For the first time ever, one local high school has their boy's basketball team preparing for the state championship game.

The East Carteret Mariners are undefeated, a perfect 31-0 heading into Saturday's game in Chapel Hill.

A pep rally was held at the school Thursday afternoon.

Colleen Guthrie, a 1978 East Carteret graduate, attended the rally.

Guthrie said, "I'm getting ready to retire from the state in 12 days. I am more excited about that ball game than I am about retiring after 30 years."

Junior Forward Ty Simmons said, "It's been pretty great. Everybody's been taking pictures with us. It's a lot to take in, but honestly, I could get used to it."

The players have been in the spotlight all season, running the table to a perfect record.

Head Coach Billy Anderson said,"Anytime you go 31 and 0, you can't equal that. So, this has got to be the best team I've coached."

The team will face two-time defending 1-A state champion Winston-Salem Prep at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill.

Win or lose, the town of Beaufort is hosting a celebration parade for the team on Sunday at 3 p.m.
