Early Morning Car Fire In Williamston

Fire officials say a burning car set a house on fire early Saturday morning in Williamston.

Lieutenant Chris Howell with the Williamston Fire/Rescue says they were dispatched shortly after 5 a.m. to a structure fire on 309 N. Haines Street. He says they had been notified that a car under the carport attached to the home was on fire.

When the first engine arrived about 50 per cent or the structure was involved, an initial attack was started under the carport and the attic portion of the home according to Howell.

He says the initial cause of the fire was from the car parked under the carport.

He says the Williamston Police Department arrived prior to the Fire Department and helped all the people to get out of the house.

One person was transported to Martin General Hospital for smoke inhalation according to Howell.

He says the fire was under control within 45 minutes. The home was extensively damaged in the fire.
