The mother of an ECU student survived the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Sarah Feinstein told WITN News that she drove 570 miles from Greenville to her home in Newtown, Connecticut on Saturday. The 21-year-old is a senior at East Carolina.
She says her mother, Laura, is a special education and reading teacher at Sandy Hook. "She lost six of her colleagues. She lost three of her students," Feinstein said of her mother. "She's just traumatized by it all," Feinstein said.
The ECU student says her mother heard gunshots last Friday morning, grabbed three to four of her students and hid under her desk. Feinstein says by the time she spoke to her mom on the phone she had already escaped to the nearby fire house.
Feinstein is one of several Newtown High School students who returned to their hometown this weekend to help raise money for victims' families.
They have established a non-profit organization to help with fundraising.
