ECU sent out email alerts following reports of two assaults over the weekend but did not send out text alerts, prompting some students to ask why.
The assaults happened within a span of two hours over the weekend in Greenville.
East Carolina Police say the first incident was around 12:45 a.m. Saturday morning off 4th and student streets when a woman says a man grabbed her then took off away from campus. The second happened just after 2:30 a.m. on Trustee Way near Garrett Hall. A man and woman claimed four people, two with knives, threatened to cut them. The male victim had minor injuries after the four took off in a Range Rover.
Students say they got the message through email about the crimes, but no text message.
Lt. Chris Sutton with ECU Police says text messages are only sent when the threat is immediate or the situation is dire.
Sutton says the alert system is tested frequently and worked in this case.
No arrests have been made in either assault case.
