ECU Campus Becoming More Pedestrian, Less Vehicle Friendly

Construction underway on the ECU campus is designed to make it more pedestrian and bike friendly.

Founders Way that connects 5th Street to 10th Street at ECU is now cut in half. Drivers coming off 5th Street will only be able to drive around the fountain and Wright Auditorium and then back out again. Those traveling on 10th will have to stop by the science complex and then turn around.

John Fields, the architectural services director, says the while the focus of this plan is for the safety of pedestrians, this traffic detour will not hinder emergency vehicles passing through. Fields says, "We have to have safe buildings, so we have to have fire truck access, vehicle access everywhere, so we will be accommodating those things, but we're refocusing to make this a pedestrian friendly campus."

Michael Talton is the project manager and says, "The atmosphere you got on the mall out there, I think it's good that we're extended that and pulling it into the rest of the campus, it's going to connect the campus with more green space, more pedestrian friendly areas."

Fields says this one-million dollar project is expected to be completed by November or December.
